National Geographic has chosen another award-winning actor in Genius: Aretha Franklin, who chronicles the life of the late Aretha Franklin. Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance will star alongside Grammy winner Tony Cynthia Erivo in the third season of the anthology series. The actor will play Aretha's father, CL Franklin, an influential minister.

Genius: Aretha will mark a meeting between Vance and People v. OJ Simpson director Anthony Hemingway takes on the challenge in this project as executive producer and series director. The recognized seal Nat Geo is billing Genius: Aretha Franklin as the definitive and authorized account of the life and career of the Queen of the Soul.

CL Franklin was pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit and was known as the "Voice of the million dollars." His sermons were sold in record stores and broadcast on a weekly radio show; booked visits to the national ministry and public appearances. She had a tense relationship with Aretha Franklin, but supported her throughout her career, especially when she made the decision to move from gospel to secular pop music.
